10 Best Reasons to Send a Greeting Card
By Ryan Goodrich
We live in a digital age where it is more common to send text messages, emails and private messages via social networking. Sending a traditional greeting card just seems odd and unusual considering the tools available. But there are still plenty of reasons why you should send an old-fashioned paper greeting card.
Sentimental
It somehow becomes more sentimental when you get a paper card in the mail. That may be due simply to the fact that the card is tangible and has traveled a great distance to get there. Or maybe it’s because someone went through the effort of selecting a card, writing in it and putting postage on it. It makes the recipient feel like the sender cares.
Digital Noise
Numerous forms of online communication exist, from emails to IMs to Facebook to Twitter. With all these different ways to communicate, it’s hard to keep up with all the chatter going on. In most cases, it’s so difficult to separate the important messages from the noise, users simply tend to pay less attention to all the electronic messages they get. But when a recipient gets a physical card, it’s easier to stop and pay attention.
Sans Computer
One of the best things about greeting cards is that you can experience their message without a computer. When a person is at the computer, they’re generally working or trying to accomplish something. People try to accomplish that something so that they can spend time away from the computer. Greeting cards come in the mail when we’re away from the computer, which makes an excellent break in an otherwise busy schedule.
Display
The nice thing about greeting cards is that after you’ve received one, you can hang it on the fridge or display it proudly on a book shelf. A greeting card is tangible, which means you can show it to the rest of the world without needing to load up your email or print it off.
Handwriting
A greeting card allows you to see the handwriting of the sender, which helps you enter their world. How many times have you seen that handwriting? What memories are summoned from it? Do you smell any familiar scents on the card? A greeting card can be an excellent way to revisit memories of the past.
Uplifting
Greeting cards fulfill their main purpose in uplifting the recipient. Even without having to read a word, it’s easy for a card handpicked for a specific person to lighten up their day. You don’t have to read a word to get that sudden feeling of excitement.
Infrequent
Greeting cards are much less common as we become more and more dependent on digital forms of communication. That simple fact alone means that being the recipient of a greeting card will have all the more impact simply because it’s a deviation from the norm.
Thoughts
A greeting card helps the recipient know what you’re thinking about. You can send a card that has a pre-written message that could relay any number of meanings, but the end goal is to demonstrate that you are thinking about that person. Knowing they’re on someone’s mind can be quite uplifting.
Little Things
It’s the little things that matter most in life, so why let them pass by without a thought? This will help the recipient bring attention to the small things they’ve done and help them reflect on other ways they may have influenced those around them.
Just Because
